ASIC is an acronym for Application-Specific Integrated Circuit which is a microchip designed for a special application, such as particular kind of transmission protocol or a hand-held computer. It is an integrated circuit (IC) customized for a particular use, rather than intended for general-purpose use. ASICs are used in a wide-range of applications, including auto emission control, environmental monitoring and personal digital assistants (PDAs). Modern ASCIs often include entire microprocessors, memory blocks including ROM, RAM, EEPROM, flash memory and other large building blocks such as SoC (System-on- Chip), HDL (Hardware Description Language) and VHDL etc.
